Emily Shum

I am Emily Shum and I’m a designer specialising in footwear.  Having cultivated a passion for shoes from throughout my time at University, I developed a collection of footwear for my final major project.

My work was inspired by the female Japanese warriors of the feudal era, whom were known as ‘Onna Bugeisha’. I chose this theme because not only am I fascinated by  Eastern Oriental Culture; I was inspired by a visit to the Samurai Museum in Tokyo Japan in summer 2019.

My collection is designed for modern ‘samurai’ women. My designs aim to challenge women to push their heels to new heights, mirroring women's position in modern society - pushing through the glass ceiling.

My collection 'Warrior Women' is one of artful juxtaposition, it merges the worlds of old and new culture and mixes traditional Japanese styling with contemporary elements. The collection features a heady combination of femininity, dark romantic toughness, whilst exuding exquisite glamour.  I have named each design after a traditional Japanese warrior women.
