Johann Kööp is a visual artist from Estonia, working across multiple mediums. His work reflects on collective and individual experiences with communication in the complex contemporary world.
Through ‘Rhythms of Distortion’ (2020), Kööp explores the implications of the fast pace of urban society, the structure of rhythms and networks of everyday life, best defined by Lefebvre’s concept of city rhythms. Playing with these ideas of the network, communication, experience and social space, Koop seeks to simulate excessive social presence, blurring the lines of distinction between home and public space, considering social anxiety, and what this means for the perception of such themes. In exploring these intersections between the public and the private, Koop seeks to highlight the interaction between the cyclical rhythms of certainty and the linear rhythms that are more susceptible to change, beginning to distort the meaning of what is important.
