Ernie Liu

I am a illustration and graphic student who aims to be a production designer in theatre and movie in the future. Therefore in order to get myself more prepared for this industry, I have created a theatre production based on a Japanese movie “ひゃっきやこう (Haunted Night)” for this final major project in Coventry Unversity I have made six character designs, showing makeup and gestures, based on the features of these characters I have also made sets for them including props and costumes.

This Japanese movie is a famous folk story in China and Japan, and is about the monster parade that happens every midsummer night. The designs are very imaginative with a sense of Asian art, and I am demonstrating how these designs change once applied to theatre. The model making uses a laser cut wood approach determined by the vintage temple appearance of traditional Chinese or Japanese buildings. This allows for overall consistency of visual style throughout.
